Adaptive finite element techniques are developed that enable to simulate forming processes of complex functional components with complicated design details on contemporary computers. These techniques are based on an algorithmically controlled local adaptation of the employed model combined with an adaptive choice of the local mesh-density and the used trial-space. Rigorous error estimation guarantees a balance of the locally employed model, mesh density and finite element trial space. The new numerical methods will be transferred into standard software in forming technology.
