Adaptive finite element techniques are developed that enable to simulate forming pro­ces­­ses of complex functional components with complicated design details on con­tem­po­­rary computers. These techniques are based on an algorithmically controlled local adap­tation of the employed model combined with an adap­tive choice of the local mesh-density and the used trial-space. Rigorous error esti­ma­tion guarantees a balance of the lo­cal­ly employed model, mesh density and finite element trial space. The new numerical methods will be transferred into stan­dard software in forming tech­nology.
