Through enormously high mechanical loads in particularly at fine form elements in forming tools increase wear, cold welding and fatigue phenomena, which are associated with a reduction of the tool life time as well as with a reduction of the workpiece quality. The aim of this project is to design and to deposit wear resistant, nano-structured, multilayer systems based on the model of nature. In doing so this project targets to adapt the tribological properties of workpiece and forming tools to the corresponding forming process as well as aims to provide optimal forming conditions. Furthermore these novel bionic layers will be designed with additional functionalisation to be able to measure temperature and load during forming process.
