New functions via new production processes

Sheet metal forming permits a combination of deep drawing and bulk forming in only one manufacturing step. Therefore, it is possible to produce sheet metal components which contain additionally to the realizable geometric features, further complex elements such as cogs or notches. This functional integration allows a considerable economizing of component’s expenses and weight.

The additional functions are only to be realized when the material fulfils the new requests. This goes not only for the manufacturing process but also the life cycle in which for example the abrasive wear plays a significant role. To be able to fulfill the additional functions properly a modification of the material is appropriate. Apart from a partial heat treatment there are also coatings worthy of consideration that positively influence friction and wear.

The working group’s aim is to identify which possibilities of displaying are offered by the sheet metal forming and which new components thus can be produced or rather to which functions existing components can be widened. What is more, it is to be estimated to what extend the possibilities for a following influence of the material’s mechanical quality have to be used to guarantee the component’s durability.

Within the bounds of this working group, seminars on material subjects are regularly given.
